Shubman Gill has given a surprise reaction after being overlooked from India’s squad for the T20 World Cup, which begins next month.

The star batter, who captains both the Test and ODI teams, was omitted from the 15-man group ahead of the tournament in India and Sri Lanka.

The 26-year-old was overlooked while veteran pair Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma also won’t feature in the shortest format when the World Cup kicks off on February 7.

While many expected Gill to be involved, the right-hander admitted that he wasn’t fazed by the snub as India look to win it for a second-straight time.

“Firstly, it is my belief that in my life, I am where I am supposed to be. Whatever is written in my destiny, I will have it,” Gill told reporters.

“As a player I want to win games for my team, but having said that, I respect the selectors’ decision. I wish the T20 team the very best. I hope that they win.”

Gill will be part of India’s ODI series before his teammates prepare for the World Cup and will play alongside both Kohli and Sharma, who have retired from T20s and Tests.

“Definitely when you have these two people in your team, it makes your life a lot easier and whenever you are in a tough situation, they have been in those kind of situations and conditions many times in their life, so you can always go to them.

“That piece of information is very valuable for any captain.”

Gill has scored 869 runs in T20s for India at an average of 28, scoring one century and three half-centuries across his 36 appearances.

Suryakumar Yadav will captain the team, with the likes of Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah also selected for the month-long tournament.
