The 49ers entered their wild-card round matchup with the Eagles battered and bruised, having lost a handful of their biggest contributors to injury.
However, they left the contest beaming. Kyle Shanahan’s team downed Philadelphia, 23-19, to set up a date with the Seahawks in the divisional round of the playoffs.
San Francisco didn’t make it easy for itself. The Niners surrendered two interceptions and struggled to create much offense during the game’s middle portion. They were set back by an injury to star tight end George Kittle, who was carted off after hurting his Achilles.
But the tenets that have shined through across Shanahan’s tenure in charge remained intact even as the offense floundered. The 49ers still had their defense. They still had Christian McCaffrey, too.
McCaffrey put forth a vintage display on Sunday, carving up the Eagles’ defense in a variety of ways. He collected 114 total scrimmage yards and two touchdowns, the last of which sealed San Francisco’s win.
Philadelphia huffed and puffed, benefiting from a workman-like Saquon Barkley display. But its attack was unsteady. Jalen Hurts was unable to strike up an effective partnership with A.J. Brown, while Barkley met the full-force of San Francisco’s makeshift front seven.
The Niners will have to be more consistent if they hope to move one step closer to the Super Bowl. But as long as they have McCaffrey, they have a chance. Sunday night’s outing proved it.
