Matt White has returned to the Seven Network, joining the Sydney news team as a sports presenter and contributing to a new NRL analysis show.

White will front Seven’s expanded NRL coverage in 2026, after the network won the broadcasting rights to the Rugby League World Cup 2026. White begins on the Seven News Sydney sports desk this Sunday, January 18, and from next month will also offer nightly NRL analysis across bulletins nationwide.

In addition, White will contribute to Seven’s new league-focused program NRL Agenda Setters, and join the on-air team for the Rugby League World Cup in October and November.

White spent the majority of his broadcasting career at Ten, starting there in 1993 as the host of Sports Tonight.

He enjoyed a decade-long stint at Seven between 2004 and 2014, before defecting back to Ten, taking a general sports presenter role with the network and moving to head of sport in 2018. Ten made him redundant in 2020, after which he hosted the Mornings with Matt White radio show on the Sports Entertainment Network. He exited SEN at the end of 2025.

Outside of White’s extensive sports experience, he hosted Seven’s current affairs program Today Tonight for four years, co-hosted Sunrise during the summer of 2017/18, and led coverage of the Royal Wedding of William and Kate.

“It’s a huge privilege to be re-joining Seven at such an exciting time for rugby league,” White said in a press release announcing his return to the network. “I can’t wait to get started and connect passionate footy fans with the sharpest insights and stories from across the game.”

Seven’s news and current affairs director Ray Kuka called White’s appointment a “homecoming for one of the most respected voices in Australian sport”.

“His reputation, knowledge and energy make him the perfect fit, while his deep understanding of the NRL, combined with his ability to cut through the noise and explain the game with clarity and authority, will strengthen our formidable newsroom.”
