Former UFC fighter Diego Sanchez was arrested after Albuquerque police say he fired a weapon from a car. According to court documents filed in Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court, an Albuquerque police officer was helping police service aides at a traffic collision on Interstate 40 near University. While the officer was on the scene, a white Jeep passed by and the officer heard “a loud bang.” Police service aides said the passenger of the Jeep “shot off a round.” Court documents say the officer followed the Jeep to the Sixth Street exit on I-40 and performed a felony stop. After police made announcements for the people in the vehicle to exit, they were placed into custody. Documents say Sanchez was placed in a patrol car and was questioned by police. Sanchez told officers there was a gun in the car but that he did not shoot the gun. However, when police questioned the driver of the Jeep, court documents say the driver told police that Sanchez shot a gun while in the car. The driver said he did not know Sanchez was going to shoot the gun or where the gun came from. The driver of the Jeep consented to a search of the vehicle, court documents said. Court documents indicate that an officer found two live rounds and a spent casing in the car. The gun was found in the back pocket of the driver’s seat. Sanchez was arrested and booked on charges of shooting at or from a motor vehicle and negligent use of a firearm.
