Newcastle United ace Anthony Gordon staked his claim to lead the line against Aston Villa with a sharp performance in Seoul.

With uncertainty in the air for both Alexander Isak and in the transfer market, despite attempts to bring in a striker this week, Gordon could be the most feasible option to spearhead Eddie Howe’s attack at Villa Park in two weeks.

Gordon offered a threat and weighed in with an assist to give Newcastle

Newcastle fell behind after Brennan Johnson was slipped in and Lewis Miley failed to react quickly. Johnson struck the shot from 20-yards out with Dan Burn unable to block and Pope beaten with a low shot.

Newcastle drew level seven minutes before the break thanks to a fine finish from Harvey Barnes as he staked his claim for the season on the left-hand side with a wonderful strike.

Here’s how the players rated:

Nick Pope 7

Recovered from wild clearance to save well from Tel. His performance got stronger as the night went on before he was replaced by Mark Gillespie.

Kieran Trippier 7

Was furious with his defence after slow start. A player Newcastle definitely still need.

Fabian Schar 6

Has had some unconvincing moments but should walk into team against Villa.

Dan Burn 7

A crucial 90 minutes under his belt as he kept the ship steady after rocky start.

Matt Targett 5

Up against it for most of the night. Almost let Tel in to put the game pretty much beyond Newcastle.

Joelinton 7

A decent display and steered a header wide of the post. The midfield enforcer seems back to his best.

Bruno Guimaraes 7

Up for the fight as he grabbed Romero round the neck! Full of energy despite the searing heat and overcome injury scare.

Lewis Miley 6

Switched off for the goal but could have scored to put Newcastle 2-1 up. With midfield options limited, he might be in with a shout of top-flight action this month.

Jacob Murphy 6

Improved after the break but this was a so so display.

Harvey Barnes 8

What a strike! Big moment for Barnes in pre-season, assisted by the man he’s trying to replace. Looked good when Newcastle go him on the ball.

Anthony Gordon 8

Led the line with authority and while he did not score he created openings and went off with an assist. A solid display. Man of the match.

Tino Livramento 7 (for Targett 61)
