Not only has the population of Edmonton risen over the past few years, but one of its surrounding communities has led the pack when it comes to its population growth around YEG.
Statistics Canada released its population estimates by census subdivision on Wednesday, revealing that over the past five years, Alberta as a whole went from a population of 4,431,531 in July 2021 to 5,029,346 in July 2025, an increase of nearly 600,000.
Looking at the City of Edmonton, it had a population of 1,050,954 in July 2021, and as of July 2025, it rose to 1,238,295, an increase of 187,350.
Looking at regions around Edmonton, one area stood out for seeing the largest swing in population, with the City of Spruce Grove growing by 5,507 from 2021 to 2025, to settle at a population of 44,575.

With a population boom like that, it makes sense that a large retail plaza and apartment project is currently in the works for Spruce Grove.
Strathcona County, which includes Sherwood Park, came in second place, growing by 4,919 to come to a population total of 107,345.
The City of Beaumont and the City of Leduc were nearly neck-and-neck over the five-year time period; however, Beaumont edged out a win with an increase of 4,617 to come to 26,305. Leduc grew by 4,598, to land at a 2025 population of 39,966.
The City of St. Albert grew by 4,232 people, arriving at a population total of 74,621 in 2025, while the City of Fort Saskatchewan grew by 2,008 to come to 30,575, and Stony Plain rose by 1,066 to come to 19,662.
The City of Calgary saw the largest population increase over the five-year timeframe, going from 1,356,293 in 2021 to 1,612,834, an increase of more than 250,000 residents.
Population estimates are based on the Standard Geographical Classification (SGC) 2021 as delineated in the 2021 Census.
