Boulder County is under a red flag warning on Friday for elevations between 6,000 and 9,000 feet as the National Weather Service is warning of critical fire weather.

The warning is in effect from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, according to NWS. Critical fire weather warnings mean unusually high temperatures, low humidity and wind.

Winds are expected to persist between 30 and 45 mph, with gusts reaching 70 mph. Relative humidity will reach as low as 18%, according to NWS.

Open burning and agricultural burning is prohibited under Stage 1 burn restrictions across Boulder County on Friday, according to the Boulder County Sheriff’s office.

Secure trailer chains and avoid yard work with equipment that could spark, Mountain View Fire Rescue warns in a social media post.

“With winds this strong and humidity this low, even a small ignition can turn into a fast-moving wildfire in minutes,” the post states. “Stay aware, make safe choices, and report any smoke or fire immediately by calling 911.”
