Mike Flanagan’s upcoming Exorcist movie has received a new release date, following production delays. The seventh instalment of the horror franchise was originally expected to hit cinemas this March, but was put on the back burner while the director prioritised his Carrie TV series.
“Production hasn’t started [on The Exorcist], we need to finish Carrie first,” Flanagan confirmed on Tumblr last year. “No way it’s coming out next March. Nothing to worry about though.”
According to Variety, Universal has now announced that The Exorcist will be released on 12 March, 2027 – almost exactly a year later than planned.
The upcoming movie has been described as a “radical new take” on the original 1973 horror, which is also titled The Exorcist.
Following the huge success of the original, which grossed $441 million globally, four more Exorcist movies were released between 1977 and 2005. In 2021, Universal acquired the rights for a new trilogy, which began with The Exorcist: Believer but was scrapped when director David Gordon Green exited the sequel.

Though Flanagan’s project will be set in the same universe as the 1973 movie, it will not act as a continuation of Green’s trilogy, instead bringing a “fresh” new story to life.
“The Exorcist is one of the reasons I became a filmmaker, and it is an honour to have the chance to try something fresh, bold, and terrifying within its universe,” Flanagan previously said in a statement.

The movie will star Scarlett Johansson and Jacobi Jupe, with Flanagan serving as writer, director and producer. David Robinson and Jason Blum will also produce alongside executive producers Alexandra Magistro and Ryan Turek.
Meanwhile, Johansson recently made her directorial debut with Eleanor the Great, which follows a nonagenarian called Eleanor Morgenstein (June Squibb).
After the sad death of her best friend, Eleanor moves to New York City where she strikes up an unlikely bond with a 19-year-old (Erin Kellyman).
The Exorcist is scheduled to be released on 12 March, 2027
