Live: Storm Hunter serving for the match
Down 3-0 in the first, she came back to win 6-4.
Down 4-1 in the second, the Aussie qualifier is serving at 5-4 with a chance to win the match.
Nerves show on the first point as she sends a backhand long. 0-15
But a brilliant forehand down the line gets her back to parity at 15-15.
Jessica Bouzas Maneiro finds the open court to reach 15-30, but Hunter serves her way out of trouble. 30-30
An ace! Hunter will serve for it at 40-30.

There has been an upset on the outside courts this morning after world number 53 Peyton Stearns defeated 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin, 6-3, 6-2.
The 27-year-old, who downed Ash Barty in the semifinal on her way to winning the title, has struggled at Melbourne Park ever since.
Today is her fifth straight first round exit at the AO.
It’s certainly disappointing for Kenin, who worked hard last year to improve her ranking and be seeded once again for this tournament.

However, Stearns delivered a masterclass in serving and was incredibly confident on court.
She started strong and that set the tone for the entire match — she never took her foot off the gas, unphased by the difficult opponent on the opposite side of the net.
Stearns had 33 winners to Kenin’s nine.

Live: Storm Hunter showing her fight in second set
Aussie qualifier Storm Hunter looked in a spot of bother down 4-1 and facing a break point.
But she’s managed to battle back, hold serve, then fight off two game points to break Jessica Bouzas Maneiro for 4-3, before a love hold to get back to 4-4.
What an effort from Hunter.

Medvedev and Auger-Aliassime both out on court
Among the many in action now are Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime and Daniil Medvedev.
(Getty)
Auger-Aliassime, who had his best year on tour in 2025, took advantage of a poor start from Nuno Borges (14 unforced errors), to claim the first 6-3.
“He’s just got to cut the errors out, you can see the frustration on him, it’s just too many,” Colin Fleming said on commentary.
(Getty)
Out on Margaret Court Arena, Medvedev has only just begun his first round match.
He broke his opponent Jesper de Jong, in the opening game.
But that break of serve didn’t last long as he was broken back not long after, with de Jong levelling the first set at 2-2.
Medvedev’s serving struggles proved costly — he committed two double faults at critical moments, including one to surrender the game.

Reports from long lines at Melbourne Park
The team at Rod Laver tram stop announced it was a 2.5hr wait to enter at about 11:30! We just got through John Cain entrance in about 15 mins.
Bag check folks are suffering, barely checking any bags as they can’t keep up with the volume. Hectic!!!

Kib, that sounds like chaos.
Once again, if you bring nothing else to the grounds, make sure you pack water and sunscreen.
45m agoMon 19 Jan 2026 at 12:56amLive: Hunter storms back to win the first set
(Getty)
It looked like things were going to script early in the battle between world number 367 and world number 40, as Jessica Bouzas Maneiro jumped out to a 3-0 lead.
But Australian qualifier Storm Hunter has found her range, particularly with her flat forehand, and powered her way to a 6-4 victory in the opening set.
“Great mental effort,” coach Nicole Pratt says (she’s incredibly well mic’d up).
Hunter finishes the set with 44 per cent of first serves in, which isn’t good, but considering she dipped below 30 per cent in her first few games, that’s a pretty good comeback.

Kenin drops first set to compatriot
Sofia Kenin, the 2020 Australian Open champion, has dropped the first set against fellow American Peyton Stearns, 6-3.
The match statistics said it all — Kenin’s six winners to Stearns’ 18 wasn’t enough to even get close to competing in the opening set.
Stearns was untouchable on serve in the last game, blasting three thunderous aces — at 182, 183, and 174kmh — that left Kenin, the 27th seed, helpless.
The unseeded American played smart, using her powerful forehand to push Kenin off the baseline, more than she would want to be.

The third seed has kicked off her tournament with an immediate break of serve.

Live: It’s a perfect Storm
After trailing 3-0, Storm Hunter suddenly finds herself serving for a 5-3 lead after breaking back twice while winning 12 of the past 16 points.
Coach Nicole Pratt has offered her advice from the on-court box to “stop just rolling [her serve] in” and actually hit it with some force.
I wasn’t sure how it would hold up under the pressure of this run, but she rips her way to 40-0 with her first ace of the match!
She follows it up with another double fault and more poor first serves, but ultimately gets out of the game and leads the first set 3-5.

Live: Storm Hunter gets on the board and breaks back
It wasn’t the greatest start for Australian qualifier Storm Hunter against Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.
She’s landing under 30 per cent of her first serves and was broken in the second game of the match while her opponent held twice.
Hunter then looked set to get on the board at 30-0 and 40-15 on serve, before Bouzas Maneiro fought back.
To Hunter’s credit, she held off a break point and ultimately held for 3-1.
She really needs to sort these serving issues, but she’s been aided by a couple of unforced errors from the other side of the net, gifting her a break back.

Potapova admits copying Kasatkina’s statement
Anastasia Potapova has responded to copying her switch of allegiance statement from Australian player, Daria Kasatkina.
The world number 55 has recently moved away from representing Russia and is now hailing from Austria. She announced this decision prior to the Australian Open.
But many people on social media noticed the similarities between her post and Kasatkina’s.
After her first round win, Potapova admitted she did copy off of her friend but didn’t find “anything wrong with it”.
“You cannot say it in a better way. Why not? It was perfect words,” she said.
“I don’t think anything terrible happened, the media just blew it up.
“Who cares about posts? We talk a lot, we are good friends.”

Live: Australian Storm Hunter hits the court to start day two
After coming back from a torn Achilles tendon, Storm Hunter made it through qualifying without dropping a set.
Now she has an almighty task on her hands though, taking on Spanish world number 40 Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, who’s ranked a cool 327 places higher than her.
They’re on Kia Arena.
Hunter will be looking to emulate her career-best AO run from 2024, when she made it to the third round.
1h agoSun 18 Jan 2026 at 11:46pmTiley on crowd issues from day one
Morning all. Could we have have an update on access issues yesterday please ? Going on Thursday and hoping they’ve improved the situation.
– Phillip
Hi Phillip,
Yes, there were a few issues with very long wait times to get into Melbourne Park and also to get into matches and for vendors within the grounds on day one.
(ABC Sport: Anthony Furci)
Tennis Australia chief executive Craig Tiley told Channel Nine this morning that even organisers were surprised by yesterday’s turn-out, with ground passes selling out.
“There was more people coming on the grounds than even we expected … and a lot of people showing up at the same time. And that’s indicative of the of the interest of the event.”
Tiley urged fans to book online ahead of time and download their passes, rather than trying to get a day pass at the box office. And then, when you get in the line, laptops out of bags, belts off, sort of thing to not hold up the line.
“We will certainly put extra resources on early so we ensure that the fans have a seamless entry into the grounds.”

Which big names are in action on day two?
We’re still in the early stages of this grand slam, so the slate is pretty full, with grand slam champions as far as the eye can see.
(Getty)
Names don’t get much bigger than 24-time major winner Novak Djokovic, but the fourth seed’s not taking the court until the last match of the night session, when he’ll face off against Spain’s Pedro Martinez.
Coco Gauff and Daniil Medvedev are up first at 11:30am AEDT on Rod Laver and Margaret Court Arena respectively. 2025 Wimbledon and US Open finalist Amanda Anisimova follows Medvedev, the fourth fourth seed facing Switzerland’s Simona Waltert on MCA.
2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin is among the first starters today, clashing with fellow American Peyton Stearns from 11am on ANZ Arena.
(AP)
And speaking of former Melbourne Park winners, 2014 champ and 2026 wildcard Stan Wawrinka takes the court for potentially the final time in Australia before his retirement. He’s third on Kia Arena, up against Serbia’s Laslo Djere.
They’re followed by two-time major winner Barbora Krejcikova, who takes on 23rd seed Diana Shnaider.
Menawhile, on court eight, another surprise grand slam champ from 2014, Marin Cilic, opens his account against Daniel Altmeier.
2h agoSun 18 Jan 2026 at 11:12pmWhen is Alex de Minaur playing today?
(Getty)
Australia’s number one is on Rod Laver Arena from 1:30pm AEDT.
If you haven’t been paying attention since the draw on Thursday, I don’t want you to be surprised, so just letting you know de Minaur won’t be up against former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini.
The Italian world number 57 withdrew from their match the day before the tournament started with yet another injury and has been replaced by American lucky loser Mackenzie McDonald.
Sixth-seeded de Minaur and 113th-ranked McDonald are second on Rod Laver (not before 1:30pm) after Coco Gauff and Kamilla Rakhimova’s match.
