Former Dragons and Warrington fullback Matt Dufty has made a shock return to Sydney – with the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

The 30-year-old Dufty’s career looked to be over when he parted ways with Warrington recently, but the pint-sized fullback has come to terms on a second-tier contract with the Rabbitohs and started training with the club this week.

“It’s a NSW Cup contract – not top 30 or development list,” Souths chief executive Blake Solly confirmed to Wide World of Sports.

A noted ball runner with the ability to produce long-distance tries, Dufty scored 44 times in 82 games for St George Illawarra, but his defence was always a worry.

After playing first grade with the his junior club from 2017 to 2021, he moved to the Bulldogs but played just 12 games for one try before being released mid-season.

Dufty then moved overseas and joined Warrington and was again prolific, thrilling the crowds with his pace and energy, scoring 47 tries in 88 games with the Wolves

The livewire also finished second in the Super League’s Man of Steel voting in 2024.

Warrington – coached by Sam Burgess – decided to cut him loose earlier this month with a year to run on his contract.
