The train driver and two staff were the only occupants of the train.

Police have not said if they were hurt, but Ambulance Victoria said it did not treat anyone else at the scene.

Aerial vision appeared to show the badly damaged vehicle broken in two, with the front section on its side near the intersection.

Part of the rear appeared to be stuck under the front of train after being pushed along the track.

The train remained stationary at the scene about midday.

Fire and State Emergency Service trucks were among the emergency vehicles on scene.

The train involved appeared to belong to SCT Logistics, which describes itself as Australia’s largest private rail freight operator.

The company is based in Laverton, in Melbourne’s west.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau said it had been notified of the crash and was gathering information.

The Australian Rail Track Corporation — the national body for freight and passenger train services — referred the ABC to Victoria Police.

Regional passenger train operator V/Line says services have not been affected as the Warrnambool and Ballarat services run on a different track.
