It’s a miracle! Official figures confirmed on Monday that China’s economy grew at exactly 5 per cent in 2025, meeting the target set a year ago by the government, and confirming the initial estimate provided by President Xi Jinping on New Year’s Eve.

Economist Zichun Huang of Capital Economics reckons the notoriously rubbery official numbers wildly overstate the pace of growth, which is likely closer to 3.5 per cent. But even if we take the data at face value, this was not a good set of numbers for China.
