More context on Osaka’s outfit
For those asking, why a butterfly, Naomi?
Well, this explains it.
11m agoTue 20 Jan 2026 at 1:00pmTsitsipas progresses to second round
Stefanos Tsitsipas has won his first round match against Shintaro Mochizuki.
There was an early scare as he lost the first set, and he lost two match points before eventually winning it the next game.
But it wouldn’t be a Tsitsipas match without a little drama, right?
The Greek player smashed 16 aces in this one, and his strong service game helped him to the win.

Mochizuki can hold his head high though and he has certainly gained some new fans here in Australia.
32m agoTue 20 Jan 2026 at 12:38pmBirrell fights back to claim the second set
Well there was a lot of back and forth there in the second set but Kimberley Birrell has somehow kept her Australian Open hopes alive, clinching the second set in a tight tiebreak against Maddison Inglis, 7-6 (11/9).
At one point in the tiebreak during a critical juncture, a double fault from Birrell, resulting in a racquet being thrown, could have ended it all.
We’re still here though so grab some chocolates and put the kettle on, we’re going the distance.
Inglis is currently talking to her fiancé Jason Kubler (about strategy presumably) while Birrell is having a medical timeout after falling in the second set and grazing her fingers.

Daria Kasatkina has been beaten by Nikola Bartunkova in three sets.
There were good signs going into the third set for the Aussie however she lost all momentum after having her serve broken two games in a row.
Bartunkova really just took time away from Kasatkina in the third, keeping her on the back foot.
An impressive win from the young Czech player.

Osaka happy with win, explains her outfit
Speaking after the match, Naomi Osaka said she was very happy with her first round win.
“Thank you so much, I really appreciate it and I hope you enjoyed the match,” she said.
“I think I served really well, she is an amazing player, I have never played her before.”
On THAT outfit, Osaka said Nike let her design it.
“It’s modelled after a jellyfish, I am so grateful to be able to get to do the things I love.
“It’s really beautiful.”

She went on to explain it in more detail.
“There’s a butterfly on the hat, and on the umbrella too,” she said.
“It has to do with the Australian Open I won in 2021, which i guess is a long time ago.”

Tsitsipas takes control and the lead
The third set was more of the Stefanos Tsitsipas the Australian crowd has come to love.
The Greek star soared to a 6-2 win in the third and is now two-sets-to-one up.
On to the fourth.

Naomi Osaka has won her first round match over Antonia Ruzic in three sets.
The Japanese star started strong in the first set but dropped the second to the world number 65.
The third set was filled with breaks in serve and Osaka had plenty of luck.

However there was no luck in her backhand winner that ultimately won her the match. Impressive shot, from an impressive player.
Not easy, but got it done.

It’s tense in the all-Aussie showdown
Kimberley Birrell appeared to be visibly struggling against Maddison Inglis in the second set, with Inglis racing to a 5-2 lead.
“There have been too many unforced errors,” Lou Fleming said on commentary.

But that lead has disappeared entirely, with Birrell forcing her way back into the contest.
We’re on serve at 5-5.
“This has been a really gritty performance … she is not going to give up without a fight,” Pleming said.

Kasatkina gets a bagel in the second
Wow! Kasatkina wasn’t happy with losing the first set tie breaker.
She has won the second set 6-0 and is fired up.
Off to a third we go.
The Australian still needs to do some work on her ground strokes and returning lobs, however there has been a clear mental switch for her.
The shackles are off.

Tsitsipas and Mochizuki both tended to on court
It looks like neither player on Margaret Court Arena is comfortable, with Stefanos Tsitsipas and Shintaro Mochizuki both being seen to by doctors during the second set.
Mochizuki took out the first set 6-4, but the Greek fought back claiming the second.

Bartunkova wins tense first set over Kasatkina
It took an hour, and a back-and-forth tie break, but Nikola Bartunkova has won the first set.
Daria Kasatkina fought hard throughout, but the Czech found a way.
Kasatkina at times was tentative with her shots, and her serve.
She will need to lose that aspect of her game in the second set to turn this around.
(Reuters: Tingshu Wang)1h agoTue 20 Jan 2026 at 11:30amTechnical issues on RLA during Osaka match
Uh oh, it seems as though there is a technical issue happening right now on Rod Laver Arena during Naomi Osaka’s match against Antonia Ruzic.
The lights on the net post that go red when a ball is out have malfunctioned and are stuck on red right now.
Both Osaka and Ruzic were asked by the umpire if they wanted to play with it on, and they said no. Neither player is happy about this.
Play was halted for about 8 minutes while the malfunction was fixed.
It came at a critical juncture on Ruzic’s serve in the second set— where the pair were on deuce at 5-3 to the Croatian.
She needed to win the set to take it to a third.
And she did! We’re going all the way on RLA as Ruzic levels up the match.

Winning moment for James Duckworth
Here’s the moment James Duckworth booked himself a ticket into the second round of the Australian Open.

How are our other Aussies doing tonight?
Kimberley Birrell and Maddison Inglis are currently on serve 5-5 in the first set in an all-Aussie showdown.
Meanwhile, Daria Kasatkina is battling it out against Nikola Bartunkova on Kia Arena.
That match is also on serve in the first set at 5-5.
2h agoTue 20 Jan 2026 at 11:05amJames Duckworth advances after five-set thriller!
That was some match! James Duckworth has won it in five!
(Reuters: Hollie Adams)
The Australian wildcard had to battle a very strong opponent in Dino Prizmic, and too the crowd, who were fully behind the Croatian.
Four hours and 21 minutes was the time played. Duckworth collapsed to the floor after he won, then very quickly sprung back to life and ran around celebrating.
After the third set, Duckworth looked down and out but he dug deeper, perhaps deeper than he has done in a long time, to claw it back.
The fourth set went the distance (a running theme of this match) but in the fifth, Duckworth came into his own.
Good news for Duckworth — he now faces a young Italian player, Jannik Sinner, in the second round. Heard of him?
