Police are investigating a fatal traffic incident which killed a toddler in central Queensland. 

Emergency services were called to Jade Street in Emerald, about 270 kilometres west of Rockhampton, before 5pm on Thursday, after reports that a two-year-old girl had been hit by a blue Holden Trailblazer. 

A spokesperson for the Queensland Police Service said the girl was taken to Emerald Hospital with life-threatening injuries and died a short time later.

The incident happened on a public road. 

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or have any information or footage to come forward.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
