After an extraordinary week dominated by the apparent disintegration of the global rules-based order in Davos and the federal Coalition in Canberra, it feels like we’re limping into the Australia Day long weekend with a pretty good idea of the biggest problems facing the nation. But have we already taken our eye off the story likely to define 2026?

Certainly, it’s hard to dodge the sense that we’ve reached a real break with the past in both geopolitics and domestic politics. But when the elites at the World Economic Forum weren’t talking about the fate of a little Nordic island, there was little doubt about what they were seeing as the most pressing challenge facing the world this year: the fate of the artificial intelligence boom.
