Fans and fellow players are congratulating Chloe Logarzo Berryhill on her career – as well as offering condolences – after the Matildas veteran was forced into immediate retirement on Saturday. The 31-year-old, who played 59 matches for the Matildas, had stated this season with Western Sydney Wanderers would be her last before retiring to try and start a family.
She was hoping to win a spot in the Matildas’ squad for the Asian Cup on home soil in March, but was forced to end her career prematurely after suffering a horror knee injury last Friday night. Logarzo Berryhill was stretchered off the field in tears after going down in agony following a contest for the ball between her and Brisbane’s Leia Varley.

The Wanderers announced on Saturday that Logarzo sustained an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament), LCL (lateral collateral ligament), and tendon avulsion injury – forcing her into immediate retirement. “As I look back on the last decade, I feel nothing but extreme gratitude for the career I have had,” Logarzo Berryhill said in a statement on Saturday.
“Through all the challenges, heartbreak, success and suffering, there have been moments of pure happiness and pride. I accomplished my childhood dream, and along the way I pushed myself past what I thought was possible.

“None of those moments would have been as special without the people and coaches who have made seemingly small snippets of my life feel monumental. Thank you to my family and best friends for being my first and biggest supporters.
“Thank you, Mum and Dad, for countless sacrifices, sleepless nights and early mornings, for holding me while I cry, and for showing unconditional love and support. To my beautiful wife, thank you for allowing me to chase my dream for as many years as I wanted. Finally, thank you to the coaches who saw something in me and invested time and energy in making me a better person, which made me a better player.”
Logarzo’s club said: “The Wanderers extend their deepest gratitude to Chloe for her contributions to the club, the sport and the countless lives she has touched through her career. The club wishes Chloe every success and happiness as she begins the next chapter beyond the pitch.”
Logarzo Berryhill tore her right ACL in 2021, which started a brutal run of injuries. She missed the Women’s World Cup in 2023 and Paris Olympics in 2024, but had returned to the Matildas in recent times.
She scored eight goals in her 59 caps for the Matildas, representing Australia at the Rio and Tokyo Olympics in 2016 and 2021, and the Women’s World Cup in 2019 and Asian Cup in 2018. Teammate Tamika Yallop was among the many to pay tribute on Saturday, writing: “Superstar. So sad to see you leave the game but what a mark you’ve left.”
Another wrote: “Heartbreaking to hear her chapter has closed earlier then she wanted, what an amazing career – and so many amazing things to come in the future for Chloe and her wife.”
