CAA WOMEN’S BASKETBALL RECAP – JAN. 23
RICHMOND, Va. (Jan. 23, 2025) –Buzzer beaters, huge momentum swings, and dominant displays from the free throw line led to some enticing wins during this CAA women’s basketball gameday.
Towson 58, Hofstra 55

Tilda Sjökvist had the final say as Towson earned a 58-55 victory over Hofstra. With the score knotted at 55 with seconds to play, Sjökvist drilled a corner three to steal the lead with a second on the clock. Trailing by five with less than two minutes, the Tigers jumpstarted an 8-0 run. Towson’s leading scorer on the day, India Johnston (24 points), knocked down two free throws and the game-tying bucket. Receiving the ball with the shot clock turned off, Semaya Turner poked it loose from Hofstra’s Ema Karim to give Towson the final shot. Zoli Khalil quickly zipped the ball to the corner with a second remaing to Sjökvist, who drained the trey to end her team’s two-game skid. Alarice Gooden (17) and Sandra Magolico combined for 32 of Hofstra’s 55 points.
Charleston 71, UNCW 37

Backed by a 25-0 run in the first half, Charleston stormed back to defeat UNCW 71-37. Four minutes into the contest, UNCW had a 13-6 lead. Rori Cox was on fire, knocking down two quick threes to give her team the advantage. However, the Cougars were unfazed and held the Seahawks scoreless for the next 16 minutes of action. Six players scored during the run, including Taryn Barbot, who had nine of her 12 points fall during the stretch. Barbot got the run going, knocking down a free throw, and was joined by Tyja Beans, Sophia Tougas, and Taylor Barbot in the scoring effort to give Charleston a 21-13 lead heading into the second quarter. The run continued for the next nine and a half minutes with Robin Harmony’s program outscoring UNCW 10-2. Cox finally ended the Seahawks’ scoring drought, drilling a 3-pointer with eight seconds remaining in the half, however UNCW never overcame the Cougars’ lead. Charleston closed out the game on a 65-31 run after overcoming the first-quarter deficit. UNCW’s Cox posted 19 points in the loss.
Elon 67, N.C. A&T 60
Elon was clutch from the charity stripe to narrowly edge N.C. A&T 67-60. The Phoenix went 25-for- 26 from the line, including 7-of-8 in the fourth quarter, to go back to .500. Entering the final frame up 55-47, A&T pieced together an 11-5 run to cut the Phoenix lead to two points. With less than four minutes on the clock, the game shifted to the free-throw line. Tamia Watkins went 1-for-2 to pull Elon up by three before Laila Anderson drained four straight in the next three minutes to give Charlotte Smith’s team a 65-58 lead with 13 seconds to go. Ashlee Shaw closed out the game with two of her own to seal the win. Ashanti Fox had a team-high 16 points, including going a perfect 3-for-3 from the charity stripe. Chaniya Clark scored a game-high 21 for A&T.
William & Mary 63, Northeastern 50

William & Mary broke free in the second quarter to defeat Northeastern 63-50. Carrying a three-point advantage into the frame, the Tribe got hot. Jana Sallman’s hook shot 50 seconds in kick-started an 8-0 run that saw restricted Northeastern to zero points before the media timeout. Through the first 20 minutes, William & Mary had established a 10-point advantage on an impressive 46.4% shooting display. Cassidy Geddes was the hot hand in the first half, posting seven of her 20 points during the span. For Northeastern, Yirsy Queliz paved the way with a team-high 10 points alongside four rebounds.
Drexel 49, Stony Brook 41

Drexel held one of the hottest teams in the CAA to under 45 points, defeating Stony Brook 49-41. Drexel broke loose in the second quarter, piecing together a 9-0 run to end the first half and take a 25-14 advantage into the final 20 minutes. Coming out of the media timeout, Emilee Jones drilled a three-pointer for the Dragons with 4:04 on the clock. Amaris Baker scored the next four points for Amy Mallon’s team before Molly Rullo converted two free throws to end the half. Stony Brook stayed within reach, coming as close as six points in the third quarter thanks to a Chloe Oliver trey, but Drexel responded right away with another four-straight points from Baker to create an advantage Stony Brook could never overcome. Deja Evans was the Dragons’ leading scorer with 13 points, while Diaka Berete had a game-high 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Seawolves.
Campbell 58, Hampton 43

Campbell stretched out to a 10-point advantage through the first quarter and never looked back, defeating Hampton 58-43. Momentum was in favor of Hampton after the first media timeout. Olivia Smith sunk a pull-up jumper before the stoppage, followed up shoryt by Kayla Lezama who drained a triple to give the Pirates a 5-4 advantage. Sixteen seconds later, Ciara Alexander stole back the lead and jump-started a 10-0 run. Gianni Boone saw six of her career-high 21 points fall during the stretch as Campbell took a lead it never relinquished. Kiara McElrath had a team-best 12 points for the Pirates.
