Grinning Barry Ferguson has played down chatter that his nephew Lewis could leave Bologna for Celtic this month.

But amid an on air grilling over the potential switch, Ferguson joked that a “cheeky” loan to Rangers would suit the Scotland international better. Lewis, who is also the son of former Ibrox star Derek, has a massive summer ahead with Steve Clarke’s men at the World Cup.

But after captaining the side to Coppa Italia glory last season, Ferguson has found regular minutes harder to come by this season. The 26-year-old made a rare start for the Serie A side in the Europa League draw with Celtic – and he cut a frustrated figure at full-time.

The result continues Ferguson’s dismal run against Celtic – who he has now faced 17 times across spells with Bologna, Hamilton Accies and Aberdeen and does not have a single win to his name. One caller to the Go Radio Football Show had a suggestion for the midfielder – if you can’t beat them, join the.

Arne Engels is being touted for a move to RB Leipzig, and should the Belgian depart a punter suggested Ferguson Jr would be the perfect replacement. Asked if the Bologna captain would Ferguson consider a move to Celtic, Barry smirked: “I don’t know what Lewis’ thoughts are, Lewis is his own guy.

“I think there will be a fair bit of interest in him, if I’m being honest with you. I think a lot of clubs will look and think ‘he’s not playing’ and ‘what is the reason’.

“I have watched Bologna a few times, he has not been at top form but he has still been good.

“He was out for eight or nine months with a cruciate, so you have got to remember that as well, but he is fully fit and he is ready to go. I’m sure a lot of clubs will be looking.”

Pressed on a “cheeky loan move” to Celtic Park, Ferguson clapped back: “Aye, a wee cheeky loan move to Rangers would be nice.”
