The regrettable Evander Kane acquisition is seemingly concluding.
With a little over three weeks remaining where NHL general managers can make moves before the March 6 trade deadline, time is ticking for the Canucks to try and get assets for Kane.
There were rumblings last week that the Los Angeles Kings and former Edmonton Oilers general manager Ken Holland had interest in the veteran winger.
Now, two other teams have joined the conversation.
NHL Analyst Kevin Weekes recently reported that, according to multiple sources, the Dallas Stars and Colorado Avalanche have interest in acquiring the 34-year-old.
The mention of both teams is interesting based on the fact that they’re basically on a collision course to, once again, meet in the postseason.
Dallas has ended Colorado’s season in consecutive years, and three times in the last six campaigns.
Colorado is the runaway favourite to lock up first place in the Western Conference, while the Stars are currently poised to face Quinn Hughes and the Minnesota Wild in Round One.
So, is either team likely to acquire Kane?
Both the Avs and the Stars are right up against the cap, meaning the Canucks would assuredly have to retain to make a deal happen.
Based on the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the Canucks can only retain up to half of Kane’s $5.125 million cap hit, meaning they could hold back $2.56 million in a Kane trade.
According to PuckPedia, Dallas is currently set to have $3.2 million of cap space at the deadline, and Colorado is expected to have a shade over $5 million in deadline cap space.
In terms of assets to give up, Colorado doesn’t have any picks in the first three rounds of this year’s draft. For fans hoping Vancouver can do better than a fourth-round pick, the Avalanche do have two second-rounders in 2027.
Dallas has also been bleeding draft capital as they perennially chase a Stanley Cup. They’ve already traded away their first and fourth-round picks in this year’s draft.
Based on the limited cap space and dwindling draft capital, it seems most likely that either team would look at Kane as a secondary option on the trade market.
Kane currently has nine goals and 23 points in 49 games this season.
