Last offseason, the San Francisco 49ers brought in former first-round pick Mac Jones on a two-year, $7 million deal to serve as quarterback Brock Purdy’s backup through the 2026 season.
Jones, 27, appeared in 11 games and started eight while Purdy dealt with a toe injury. Jones completed 69.6% of his passes (a career-high) for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns and six interceptions while leading the 49ers to a 5-3 record.

With just one year left on his contract, many believe San Francisco could try and move on from Jones this offseason in a trade and get a draft pick back in return.
Earlier this week, the MMQB’s Albert Breer was asked what team Jones will play for next season, and he came up with one that isn’t the 49ers.
“Minnesota would be a fun idea,” Breer wrote. “The Vikings will bring in competition for J.J. McCarthy, but may have to do it on a budget. They’ve explored the reclamation project path that worked so well for them with Sam Darnold in 2024. Tua Tagovailoa and Kyler Murray could be ideas, just not on their current contracts. Jones—who, like Darnold, would be coming from San Francisco—would make a good amount of sense.”
49ers general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan didn’t seem overly interested in moving on from Jones at their end-of-year media availability, but they may consider it for the right price.

If Minnesota is offering a Day-2 pick or maybe one of their top wide receivers, San Francisco may be more willing to listen.
