Glasgow Warriors wing Kyle Steyn admits his backline “owe the forwards a few beers” after they played a leading role in claiming victory over Zebre Parma on Saturday.

Steyn was part of the side that won on the road and the bonus-point triumph moved them top of the United Rugby Championship due to the Stormers losing to the Sharks.

The Stormers‘ first defeat of the URC campaign sees them drop to second as Glasgow now sit pretty at the summit following their 26-21 win at Stadio Sergio Lanfranchi.

Bonus-point win

Franco Smith’s team won thanks to hooker Gregor Hiddlestone’s brace while Adam Hastings also went over in the second period to add to a penalty try after 19 minutes.

Steyn spoke after the match and was quick to praise his forward pack for their shift in Italy, saying the backs should be buying them a drink following their performance.

“It was a tough match. I said to the boys in the backline that we owe the forwards a few beers for that one,” said the skipper who was recently named in Scotland’s squad.

“Credit to our pack for the way they just stuck in it – the mauls, the defence was awesome. That won us the game.”

Head coach Smith added: “It’s always excellent to win here.

“It wasn’t pretty. Everyone always feels the team winning must do more, but Zebre put up a big fight.

“They never went away. They just stayed in it. So compliments to them and their coaching group. I think there’s something special happening there.”

Loss for Stormers

As mentioned, the Stormers had their unbeaten streak in the league ended by the Sharks as the hosts suffered a 30-19 home loss in front of a 52,087 Cape Town crowd.

Sharks full-back Aphelele Fassi was named Player of the Match with centre Andre Esterhuizen sealing the maximum by crossing for his side’s fourth try on 73 minutes.

There is one round remaining in the URC ahead of a break during the early Six Nations rounds, with Glasgow hosting Munster next while the Stormers go to the Sharks.
