CHICAGO — The second-ranked University of Chicago men’s basketball team suffered its first loss in over two months on Sunday afternoon in an 89-68 loss to NYU. The 21-point loss is the largest loss for the Maroons since falling to WashU by 25 in 2022.

The Violets started the game hot from long range, and they would continue their hot shooting for the entire game, shooting 60% from the floor and 73% from three. The Violets’ starting forwards entered the game shooting at a 29% clip (23-79) from long range, but the duo combined to go 9-9 from the outside for 9 of the 16 NYU triples in the win.

After a close start with NYU leading 13-10, the Violets rode a 9-0 run to a double-digit lead, and they would close the half with another 9-0 run to take a 43-24 lead into the locker room.

In the second half, NYU grew their lead to 27 at 57-30 with 14:58 remaining in the game, but the Maroons responded with a 19-3 run of their own to cut the deficit to 11 with 10:37 remaining thanks to five triples in the four-minute span, three of which came from Daniel Cochran. However, following a timeout by NYU, Andrew Waldman, who entered the game 6-22 from long range on the season, would hit triples on three consecutive possessions to extend the lead back to 18 and end all hopes of a UChicago comeback.

Shane Regan led the team with 18 points, and Daniel Cochran added 16 points in the loss. Joe Berry also finished in double figures with 10 points and a team-high 5 assists.

With the loss, the Maroons fall to 14-2 on the season and 4-1 in UAA play, snapping their 12-game win streak. UChicago returns to action on Friday, January 30, as the team hosts Rochester and #3 Emory in their penultimate home weekend of the season.
