Rangers hero Kris Boyd has questions skipper Callum McGregor’s claims about the Celtic squad’s togetherness after the Wilfried Nancy disaster.

In an explosive takedown, he insisted that the draw with Hearts – that saw the Hoops fall to third in the Premiership and fail to make up ground on the leaders – raises serious questions over the depth of their squad. Hearts twice fought back from a goal down on their own turf to draw 2-2 with Celtic in a thrilling Tynecastle title showdown.

It comes just days after McGregor opened up on Nancy’s tenure – which ended after just 33 days before Martin O’Neill was drafted back into the dugout for a second time this season. The captain insisted the positive from the debacle was “how much the players stayed together” during a run of two wins from eight games.

Speaking to Sky Sports about the potential for a late recruitment drive, Boyd delivered a brutal verdict on the Scottish champions squad – including the skipper. He said: “Who then do you leave out? Daizen Maeda has shown for a number of years that he is key to Celtic being successful.

“I’ve got to say, I’m a little surprised with Yang because I have never seen it under the previous managers, but I think Martin when he came in has been able to get a tune out of him. He scored today and he is a threat, and they have obviously added at the top end of the pitch.

“You can’t play five strikers. It’s easy to say Celtic need to get quality in at the top end of the pitch, but you look at it, they are disjointed in the middle of the pitch as well.

Callum McGregor isn’t having the same impact on games that he has had. Benjamin Nygren – that is his eleventh goal of the season, but I don’t see him getting on the ball and dictating it, but where would Celtic be without his goals?

“Arne Engels has been a disappointment for me, again. The competition for places needs to strengthen and then that might get them back to a level, because that is something Celtic have had over a number of years.”

He then moved on to McGregor’s interview, adding: “When you hear Callum McGregor talking about the team sticking together, they didn’t show that on the pitch under Wilfried Nancy.

“It’s all well and good saying ‘we stuck together and this’; they didn’t do that at the time.”
