The Miami Marlins have been no strangers to pitcher trades in recent years, especially in the last year or so. Three solid starters have been dealt, and more could be on the way.

Ryan Weathers and Edward Cabrera were both traded this offseason, while Jesus Luzardo was dealt last winter. But what about Sandy Alcantara, the player most talked about at last year’s trade deadline?

Well, according to ex-MLB GM Jim Bowden of The Athletic, the Marlins Cy Young righty is “likely” to be traded by one of three dates in the next year. Bowden believes Alcantara will be on the move, and the only question is when such a deal will happen.

Sandy Alcantara trade rumor reveals 3 dates for possible deal

“Given the Marlins’ budget constraints,” Bowden writes, “it’s likely he’s traded at some point between now and the trade deadline, or at the very least by next offseason.”

Bowden believes that Alcantara will be traded in the next year, with a deal materializing either before the 2026 season begins, by the MLB trade deadline in July, or at some point next offseason.

Alcantara is under contract for $17.3 million in 2026, and he has a $21 million club option for the 2027 season. That club option is incredibly valuable, especially if he can get back to Cy Young caliber in the rotation.

Someone as good as prime Alcantara is worth a good deal more than $21 million per-year. Some teams will want him for that price, and would be willing to trade a decent amount of value to the Marlins to make a deal work.

Bowden sees a deal happening in the coming year, with the only question of whether it happens before the 2026 season, by the trade deadline this year, or next offseason.

The 30-year-old righty is likely to be dealt, according to Bowden, and it’s not hard to see why. Even though they’ve already traded away a few starters, moving on from the expensive Alcantara wouldn’t be out of character for the Marlins.

It would be a sad move for Marlins fans, but based on how the team has operated in recent years, shedding money and fielding one of the cheapest teams in the league, it wouldn’t come as a surprise.
