Good Samaritans have restrained a driver who allegedly tried to run from a smashed-up car after it crashed into several others on a busy Melbourne road.

A silver Toyota Camry was seen driving erratically in Pascoe Vale before it collided with multiple cars on Sydney Road in Coburg around 12.30pm, police said.

An eyewitness told 3AW the car was allegedly travelling on the wrong side of the road towards Bell Street before it side-swept “five or six cars”.

“The whole car is covered in dents and the windscreen’s shattered,” 3AW caller Craig said.

“It’s a young guy with a beard and a grey t-shirt in the car by himself and he was driving like an absolute maniac, hitting cars, side-swept the tram.

“He just went straight through the intersection and he just about took me out.

“Half of Sydney Road’s come to a grinding halt up towards the Bell Street area.”

The car came to a stop next to Coburg Market, where police said the driver, a 27-year-old Broadmeadows man, attempted to flee the scene on foot.
