With this warm spell, we’ve seen snake activity increase quite a bit. So snakes are definitely on the move and out and about and being encountered at people’s homes.

Leon Compton
And so what sort of places are you finding them in on that basis, Justin?

Justin Kneebone
Well, on the warmer days, we’re getting quite a lot of snakes inside homes, inside our buildings, such as sheds and whatnot. We’ve had them in cars, just in people’s backyards, in roofs, you know, you name it, we’ve probably had them there.

Leon Compton
Geez, none of this is making me feel good, Justin, but that’s okay.

Justin Kneebone
I’ll tell you one good one we had come in this week. There was a lady at Bellerive Beach, she was on the beach and she actually rang in and said a snake’s just crawled into my bag on the beach.

Leon Compton
Justin, you’re freaking me out. You were literally at Bellerive Beach and had to go down there to extract a snake from a lady’s beach bag with a towel and a book and her whatever.

Justin Kneebone
She had seen the snake go into her bag. Had she not seen the snake go in there, there’s a high chance she could have been bitten. So she’s lucky she did see it go in there.

Leon Compton
What sort of a snake was it, Justin?

Justin Kneebone
Tiger snake.

Leon Compton
At Bellerive Beach?

Justin Kneebone
Yeah, we get quite a lot of tiger snakes around that area on the eastern shore.

Leon Compton
Isn’t that interesting? Because you wouldn’t think, I mean, we’re talking about one of the more built up parts of Tasmania. I know there’s a lovely dune network that sort of where I’m assuming they’re spending most of their time, but you get quite a few there.

Justin Kneebone
On the eastern shore, all along through Howrah and Tranmere, we get a lot of snake call-outs. We probably get two a day there at the minimum.
