Apple launched a slew of updates for its iPhone models earlier this week, some of which were for older phones as old as the iPhone 5s, so their access to Facetime and Messages could continue, with that update causing problems for the iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X in connecting to 000 properly, or the Telstra network.
Earlier this week. Telstra notified its customers it was “currently investigating an issue preventing some older Apple devices from connecting to our network. We’re working on this as a priority with Apple and will share updates as we have them.”
The devices expected to be impacted were the:
iPhone 8 updated to iOS 16.7.13
iPhone 8 Plus updated to iOS 16.7.13
iPhone X updated to iOS 16.7.13
This caused Apple to initially stop some of the updates for affected devices, and it also caused some older iPhones to not connect to the 000 service, causing waits of 30 seconds to a minute until a competitor’s mobile network could be found and connected to.

In what is good news, Apple worked fast to prepare a fix on January 29 at 3.30pm where Telstra noted:
Apple has released a carrier settings update to fix this issue
To install the update, follow these instructions:
Connect your impacted iPhone to Wi-Fi
Tap Settings > General > About
Accept the carrier settings update by tapping “OK”
Confirm the update installed by going to Settings > General > About and make sure it says “Telstra 54.1” next to Service Provider
If the Service Provider version does not show “Telstra 54.1” check you’re connected to Wi-Fi and repeat the steps above.
