Police say the motive behind the theft of a portable safe from a hotel in Sydney’s CBD this morning is unknown, with the safe holding nothing of “particular value”.
Police were called to a hotel on Little Pier Street at Haymarket at about 5.40am.
They were told two men threatened staff before stealing the safe.

The two staffers, a man and a woman, were physically detained and taken to a back office, where they were threatened and the safe was stolen.
After initial reports one of the men may have been armed with a gun, Chief Inspector Gary Coffey confirmed later this morning that CCTV revealed there was no gun, but one of the men had a screwdriver.
No injuries were reported.
“The contents of the safe are of no particular value,” Coffey said.
“It was not a high-value item at all.”
He said the safe had contained documents and other material associated with the hotel, rather than cash deposits.
“It’s very unusual to target this kind of hotel at this hour of the morning,” Coffey said.
Police have released descriptions of two men they believe can assist with investigations.
The first man is described only as wearing a grey jumper and grey tracksuit pants.
The second man man is described as wearing dark-coloured jumper and tracksuit pants.
Both had their faces covered.
It’s believed they are driving a 2013-model Volvo station wagon described as beige in colour, with NSW registration CJZ 08Z.
The vehicle was reported stolen from Petersham on January 23.
People are warned to not approach the men if seen, but to call Triple Zero.
Anybody with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers online or on 1800 333 000.
