Google has expanded Gemini’s use in Google Maps, allowing cyclists and walkers to use the AI assistant during navigation.

The update builds on the introduction of Google’s AI assistant to the navigation service last November, when the company brought in the conversational assistant to answer basic questions such as where the next stop is, find places (rest stops, restaurants, etc.) along your route, and handle parking-related tasks.

Now, if you are walking or cycling through a new area in your city, you can ask Gemini questions, and you should receive conversational answers quickly and on the go.

You can ask questions like “Ok Google, what neighbourhood am I in?” or “What are top-rated restaurants nearby?” and Gemini will recommend options along your route based on Google’s “Maps’ fresh, comprehensive information about the real world.”

If you’re cycling, Gemini provides hands-free assistance to help you stay safe on the road. Google also provides example questions, such as “What’s my ETA?” and “When’s my next meeting?” if you have entered your meeting in a compatible calendar app. If you are running late, you can also ask Gemini to “Text Sarah I’m 10 minutes behind.”

The new Gemini features for Google Maps are now available worldwide on both iOS and Android, wherever Gemini is available.
