EXCLUSIVE: Michael Smiley (Bad Sisters), Danny Huston (The Aviator), Camille Cottin (Call My Agent!), and Ulrich Thomsen (Lanterns) have joined the cast of The Riders, A24‘s new film from Academy Award-winner Edward Berger, based on the Tim Winton novel of the same name.
Taking place in multiple locations across Europe, production on the film kicked off today. No word on the roles to be played by the newcomers. As previously announced, Brad Pitt leads the cast, which also features Coco Greenstone and Julianne Nicholson.
Published in 1994, The Riders follows Scully, an Australian man who traverses Europe, alongside his young daughter Billie, in search of the wife that abandoned them.
David Kajganich adapted the screenplay, with Ridley Scott and Michael Pruss aboard to produce for Scott Free, alongside Kajganich, Berger for Nine Hours, and Pitt, Jeremy Kleiner, and Dede Gardner for Plan B Entertainment.
Reuniting Scott Free, Berger and Kajganich following their work together on AMC’s The Terror, the project began coalescing a decade ago when Kajganich brought the novel to Scott Free and it caught the interest of Berger. A24 is financing the film and will handle its release worldwide.
An Irish actor most recently seen in the series Bad Sisters (Apple TV) and Alien: Earth (FX), Smiley is represented by B-Side Management.
Known for roles in films like The Aviator and The Constant Gardener, Huston has most recently been seen starring opposite Liam Neeson in Paramount’s reboot The Naked Gun. He is repped by Julian Belfrage Associates, UTA, and Untitled Entertainment.
Cottin is a French actress known for roles in series like Call My Agent! and Killing Eve, whose recent film credits include Stillwater and A Haunting in Venice. She is repped by Agence Adequat, B-Side Management, and UTA.
Thomsen is a Danish actor known for Banshee, The Blacklist, and The New Pope, among other projects. Soon to be seen in HBO’s DC series Lanterns, he is repped by Artium Agency, Accelerate, and Link Entertainment.
