Guerschon Yabusele was the Knicks’ biggest free agent signing this summer, and he’s already on the move.
New York is trading Yabusele to the Chicago Bulls for guard Dalen Terry, league sources confirmed to The Athletic.
The 30-year-old Yabusele, who has a player option for next year, struggled to regularly crack the rotation after the first weeks of the season and was basically glued to the bench all year. He was struggling both to defend and make open shots in a system where there are plenty of open-shot opportunities.
The Knicks, given their financial situation deep into the first-apron payroll threshold, couldn’t afford to get so little production out of that contract slot, so a deal was bound to happen. New York, per league sources, has been trying to move Yabusele for quite some time.
Yabusele was a first-round pick by the Boston Celtics in 2016 but was out of the NBA by 2019. After a strong showing in the Parish Olympics in 2024, he signed a deal with the Philadelphia 76ers, averaging 11 points per game and shooting 38 percent from 3 in 2024-25.
By swapping Yabusele and Terry, the Knicks will shed salary and add little more flexibility this offseason. The savings this season will allow the Knicks to get a buyout candidate in the last week of March as opposed to the first week of April.
Terry has a team option for next season. He likely won’t be in the rotation for Knicks coach Mike Brown, but he provides some more size and insurance in case of injury. He’s shooting 41 percent from 3 on very low volume.
