AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Outside of golf, there’s the argument that basketball defines Augusta, both men’s and women’s from from AAU to high school, college and semi-pro.
The latest team to throw their name into the hat is the Augusta Hurricanes, providing a second chance to our area athletes when often they feel they don’t have one.
The Hurricanes have launched their first season in Augusta.
They’re part of the Women’s American Basketball Association.
That’s the same association that the Georgia Soul played in when they had a women’s team.
When they left, a few girls on the roster would reach out.
So so instead of just meeting up for a game of pick-up they decided to make it the real deal and compete.
They’re now one of 19 teams competing in the ABA, nine in the South Division.
They have athletes anywhere from straight out of high school to 43 years old.
“I want us just basically to get this organization big enough so that we can get back to the community. So females who don’t consider they want to go off to college anyway, they can always have a place to come back and play professional basketball and get that exposure. We get plenty of exposures from overseas scouts. Sometimes even college scouts come out and watch. So my thing is, if they can get that exposure and anything we can do to get them to the higher level, I’m all for it,” said Rashay Rawls, owner of the Augusta Hurricanes.
