But her casting in the film version was vetoed by studio boss Jack Warner.
Instead the movie starred Audrey Hepburn, with her singing voice dubbed by Marni Nixon.
But after seeing her on stage, another studio head, Walt Disney, cast Andrews in his own upcoming movie.

Mary Poppins was a massive hit, and Andrews went on to win the Golden Globe for the role.
“This lovely honour is a wonderful memento of a very happy time. My thanks to a man who made a wonderful movie, and who made all this possible in the first place… Mr Jack Warner,” she said.
The crowd gasped and then burst into laughter at the playful jab.
Warner himself wiped away tears as he laughed.
