Spoiler alert – it wasn’t.
Goulburn Valley Playing Area’s penultimate weekend pennant round pitted the division one sides against each other on Saturday morning, with only two points separating host side Golf from the Magpies before the first jack was rolled.
But long-time GVPA power Golf showed why it has ruled the roost for years now, cleaning sweeping the unassuming visitors in a ferocious display.
Superstar skip Brad Orr set the tone with a 30-15 rink victory over Bill Taylor’s four, with John Gribble also executing a 15-shot winning margin in the second set of ends.
Though rinks three and four weren’t quite as emphatic, they too belonged to the Golfers as the home side romped to an 18-113 to 0-66 triumph to trail only Tallygaroopna, which also let its powerhouse presence be known.
In a Friday night special, the Redlegs made short work of Mooroopna under lights.
The Cats challenged Tally for most of the evening but were ultimately outmatched across the board, falling 18-86 to 0-62 as the Redlegs went 31 points clear at the top of the tree.
Elsewhere, East Shepparton’s remarkable run continued as it knocked off its third consecutive foe.
After trumping Shepparton Park and Tallygaroopna in recent weeks, East toppled Seymour VRI 16-90 to 2-67 to sew up its best finish in a number of years.
Following back to back wooden spoon finishes, East now sits in fifth with a game against sixth-ranked Tatura-Hill Top to close out the campaign.
Finally, the Bulldogs were defeated by 28 shots against third-placed Shepparton Park as the latter prepares for finals action.
