Joshua Da Silva batted to the end for a century. But not even that was enough to prevent PowerGen Penal Sports grabbing first innings points as the third round in the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board’s National League Premiership One two-day competition concluded yesterday.

In a round where no team managed an outright victory, early front-runners Queen’s Park Cricket Club (QPCC 1) were pegged back by PowerGen, who won a day-long battle for first innings points at their ground in Syne Village, Penal.

That was despite the concerted effort of Da Silva, who struck the only ton of the weekend, and his teammate Jyd Goolie.

Resuming on 39 for two in reply to PowerGen’s first day total of 267, QPCC 1 eventually fell 23 runs short of their target.

Mainly in partnership with Goolie, Da Silva steadily accumulated his runs, initially deferring to Goolie.

Strapping left-hander Goolie, who had started the day on 24, first added a further 20 with fellow leftie Amir Jangoo before Jangoo drove a low return catch to Avinash Mahabirsingh with the total on 59.

Da Silva’s arrival however, gave Goolie the chance to build a partnership for the fourth wicket that was eventually worth 118 before, eventually, Goolie became an lbw victim of off-spinner Jon Russ Jagessar from round the wicket. Goolie was then on 88, having struck nine fours.

There was still useful batting to come for the Parkites, but PowerGen’s combination of spinners steadily made inroads thereafter. From Goolie’s dismissal at 177 for four, QPCC 1 slumped to 219 for nine, with five-star Jagessar (five for 90) also removing Yannic Cariah, Khary Pierre, and Bryan Charles yesterday, in addition to Kyle Ramdoo on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Mahabirsingh bowled Sunil Narine while Antony Adams did the same to Mikkel Govia.

Da Silva was on 77 when Jagessar removed Charles, but he got 24 of his team’s last 25 runs in partnership with last man Stephon McPherson to get to 101 (nine fours, two sixes) before McPherson fell to a Jaggesar catch off Adams as Queen’s Park succumbed for 244.

Central/Yorkshire pick up pts

At Inshan Ali Park, reconfigured Central Sports Yorkshire piled up needed points against Preysal Sports.

Preysal resumed yesterday on 37 for one, chasing Central/Yorkshire’s first innings total of 305. However, they did not get close, being dismissed for 188 and conceding a lead of 117 on first innings. Guyana/West Indies off-spinner Kevin Sinclair followed up his 94 on Saturday with a haul of five for 57.

Batting a second time, Central/Yorkshire went in search of bonus points and closed on 208 for five, with Riyaad Mohammed (77 not out) and opener Antonio Gomez (63) getting half-centuries.

At Wilson Road, opener Vikash Mohan took six wickets in KFC Clarke Road’s fixture against Bess Motors Marchin Patriots. Having made 49 on the first day which Clarke Road ended on 127 for five, replying to Patriots’ 170, Mohan saw his side eventually dismissed for 172, just snatching first innings points. And the second time around the Patriots made 228, led by Evin Lewis’ 61, with Mohan taking six for 57. In the other match in Arouca, Merryboys got first innings advantage over Prisons Sports.
