WBC Activity – January 2026

 

Guests at this first Martes de Café of 2026 included Don Majeski, Jesus Ramos, O’Shaquie Foster, Puas Olivares, Chiquita Gonzalez, Brandon Mejia, and many others.

The final of the WBC Boxing Grand Prix took place on December 19 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. At this edition of Martes de Café, Brandon Mejía, the tournament’s featherweight champion, was in attendance.

 

Elegantly skilled WBC super featherweight world champion O’Shaquie Foster was present. An emotional video was shown, recounting his story, his path with the WBC, and his most recent fight against Stephen Fulton.

 

Interim middleweight champion Jesús “Mono” Ramos Jr. was present too. He received his ring, certificate, and bracelet, as the championship belt had already been presented to him following his last fight against Shane Mosley Jr.

 

 

Hundreds of kids received presents presented by champions O’Shaquie Foster, Jesus Ramos, the Three Wise Men, Christiane Manzur, Mauricio Sulaiman, Marilyn Badillo, Pipino Cuevas, and other prominent members of the Green and Gold family.

Proud WBC Champions spreading joy and gifts to young children

 

Undefeated Agit Kabayel successfully defended his WBC Interim Heavyweight title, by hastily defeating Poland’s Damian Knyba via technical knockout in the third round.  

In a bout charged with drama and adrenaline, Cuban prospect Jadier Herrera captured the vacant WBC Interim Lightweight world title after defeating the seasoned Panamanian Ricardo “El Científico” Núñez by technical knockout in the eighth round.

In a display of focus, dedication, discipline, and tempered power, undefeated Briton Dalton Smith became the new WBC Super Lightweight world champion by spectacularly knocking out Puerto Rico’s Subriel Matías in the fifth round.

 

 

The dazzling lights of Times Square, in the City that doesn’t sleep shone with a special intensity, to welcome the new titan of the 140-pound division, Britain’s Dalton Smith, as he was officially presented with his WBC Super Lightweight World Championship Belt. In a ceremony to remember, before a crowd of fans, Smith received the iconic Green and Gold Belt from Jill Diamond, WBC International Secretary and Chair of WBC Cares.

Premiere of the highly anticipated Naseem Hamed biopic, featuring lead stars Pierce Brosnan and Amir El-Masry.

During Martes de Café, a boxing card was presented with the goal of helping young people undergoing addiction rehabilitation. Aaron Silva, Director of Hacienda Nueva Vida, was the promoter.

 

Rising Mexican Star Carlos Elvira received WBC Fecarbox belt. Elvira defeated Amil Roldon by knockout in the eighth round on November 22 in Belize, capturing the FECARBOX lightweight title.

 

If a person is to be judged by their friends, then during and throughout his extraordinary and exceptional life, Jose Sulaiman gained riches beyond measure, as the Service Commemorating the 12th anniversary of his passing, at the Old Basilica of Guadalupe, was packed with members of the World Boxing Council`s Global Family from all corners of The Earth.

 

In UK, Denise and Lorne Castle launched a self defense class for women. This workshop which is free to all ages, involves physically warming up, then boosting confidence, awareness, reactions, plus how the body reacts to trauma, distraction and escape techniques. Denise and Lorne have done hundreds of self defense courses at Bournemouth Girls Grammar School spanning six weeks, but this one was open to the general public and it`s a synthesized into a one and a half hour class. 

 

On the seventh anniversary of the passing of Don Alberto Reyes (Cleto Reyes), there was a Service of Remembrance at Salon Alvi, Delegacion Gustavo A Madero, Mexico City. It was packed with family, colleagues who are friends and other friends from all walks of life.

 

  Gabriela “Bonita” Sánchez Announces Rematch in Puebla, scheduled for March 28 at the Auditorio GNP Seguros in Puebla, Mexico. There, Gabriela willll face Argentina’s Tamara Demarco for the WBC interim flyweight title.

 

 Gabriel “Nitchs” Jiménez received the WBC Continental Latino Silver super lightweight title that he won after defeating Daniel “Dragon” Sánchez. The event had a charitable purpose, as it was aimed at supporting people in addiction rehabilitation. Jill Diamond, Chairwoman of WBC Cares, presented the belt to “Nitchs.”

 

WBC atomweight world champion Camila “Magnífica” Zamorano announced that she will defend her title at the Palenque of ExpoGan in Hermosillo, Sonora on February 21st, . Her opponent will be Argentina’s Verónica Ruiz.  

Distinguished figures were in attendance at this meeting, including: Xochitl Lagarda, Jill Diamond, Alberto Leon, Christiane Manzur, Mauricio Sulaiman, Rex Walker, Misty Movarek, Robert Lenhardt, Mike George, Bob Yalen, and Juan Carlos Pelayo, among others.

Oleksandr Usyk, the WBC Heavyweight Champion, has once again proven that his athletic prowess extends far beyond the ring. In an international friendly, the Ukrainian icon played a pivotal role in FC Polissya’s victory over MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps.

 

During the World Boxing Council’s traditional weekly press conference, “Martes de Café,” it was officially announced that French-Cameroonian Christian Mbilli has been elevated from interim titleholder to World Champion at 168 pounds.

 

Mexican boxer Alejandro “Konejo” González will compete in a bantamweight eliminator against Britain’s Andrew Cain on Saturday, February 7, in Liverpool, England. González and his promoter, Mario Muñoz, were present.

 

The first boxing world championship in history held its finals last December, and with the conclusion of the tournament, the WBC presented special awards recognizing the highlights of the Boxing Grand Prix during the traditional Martes de Café. The award categories were: Comeback of the Tournament, Best Performance, Fight of the Tournament, and Knockout of the Tournament.

 

We commemorate a fundamental milestone in the history of global sports: the 43rd anniversary of the first-ever WBC world title fight contested over 12 rounds. This measure forever transformed boxer safety under the humanistic vision of Don José Sulaimán.

The protagonist of this historic transition was the Venezuelan Rafael Oronó, who defended his WBC World Super Flyweight Championship against Panama’s Pedro Romero in Caracas. That bout marked the starting point of one of the most significant changes in our sport.

 

Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington recovered from being badly shaken in the fourth round to eventually stop Carlos Castro in the ninth. It was a high-stakes battle for the WBC Featherweight Title, held at the iconic Madison Square Garden.

 

In a gala night for Danish boxing, Dina Thorslund reaffirmed her status as one of the sport’s most dominant figures by capturing the WBC Interim Featherweight World Title with a commanding victory over Spain’s Almudena Álvarez.
