Devonport Country Club is a state-of-the-art multi-sport facility located in the idyllic North West Tasmanian coastal city of Devonport.
The Devonport Country Club was opened in 2020 with the support of federal and state government funding and is a merger of local golf, bowls & croquet clubs on the land of the former Devonport Golf Club.
The sporting facilities include a championship 18 hole golf course and full-length driving range; 3 outdoor lawn bowls greens and 1 full-size indoor lawn bowls centre, which recently hosted the National Lawn Bowls Championships and 2 high-quality croquet lawns.
The sporting facilities are complemented by an impressive architect-designed clubhouse, which includes the golf pro shop, admin office and reception on the ground floor. The first floor boasts a sports bar/bistro and alfresco area with 150 seating capacity, along with a separate function room with a 200 seating capacity.
The growing membership includes ~ 700 golf and ~150 bowls & croquet, and in excess of 300 social.
The Opportunity
This role has become available due to the current Club Manager, who has been with the club since 2022, advising of his intention to return to his home city of Brisbane as he transitions to retirement.
Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the Club Manager has full accountability for the leadership, delivery of member and guest services and the financial performance and regulatory compliance of the Club.
Position Overview
Having been in business now for 6 years under the “new” Devonport Country Club brand, the club is entering an important next phase of operational, identity and cultural development.
This next phase will be underpinned by a business development focus; growing the club’s image & brand in the community, along with growing the club’s income, particularly through daily food & beverage sales and functions & events.
Prudent financial operational control; managing budgets whilst meeting service expectations in a member-based club is an ongoing priority.
The position is supported by a team of skilled staff, including a senior experienced turf manager, functions & events manager, bar manager, head chef, senior bookkeeper, contract golf professional, a skilled receptionist and contract IT support.
The Club Manager will have demonstrated experience, success and passion for leading teams; business development and managing a licensed venue/community sporting club.
Key Responsibilities
Growth of the club’s income, image and reputation in the community.
Leading the business development activities and strategies.
To lead, supervise and develop staff to deliver high standards of service, operational performance and morale.
Ensure an outstanding member and guest experience across all areas of the Club.
Ensure a safe and welcoming environment for members, guests, and staff.
Review and implement operational procedures to ensure the efficient running of the club.
Supervise the financial performance of the club – including budgeting, analysis & reporting.
Foster relationships with local councils, sporting bodies, sponsors, and community groups.
Address member feedback and resolve issues in a timely and professional manner.
Ensure compliance with all legal, health, and safety requirements.
Work with the Board to plan and deliver facility upgrades and strategic improvements to benefit members and guests.
Key Selection Criteria
Previous experience in sports facility or club management, or a related leadership role.
Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and develop a team.
Demonstrated business development skills
Strong understanding of food & beverage operations
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Business development and marketing experience
Organisational and time management abilities.
Experience with budgeting, financial management, and reporting.
Sound knowledge of health and safety regulations relevant to sporting facilities.
Proficiency in digital tools, including membership management systems and social media platforms.
Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as required.
Current First Aid and Working with Children Check (or willingness to obtain).
Desirable Attributes & Qualifications
Relevant tertiary qualifications in sports management, business administration, or similar field.
Passion for sport and community development.
Reporting
The Club Manager reports to the appointed Board and works closely with all club stakeholders to achieve strategic and operational objectives.
Remuneration
Remuneration and benefits will be commensurate with experience and qualifications, in line with industry standards.
