Games organisers respond to broken medals

Games organisers claim they are devoting “maximum attention” to solving the problem of Olympic medals breaking at the Milano Cortina Games.

At least four athletes had their awards fall apart in the opening three days of competition.

Earlier on day four, Games operations communication director, Luca Casassa, had this to say:

A limited number of medals have had a few problems. But as you know, the organising committee has immediately gone to the point, working in close cooperation with the Italian mint, which is responsible for the production of the medals.

A solution has been identified and a target-oriented intervention has been implemented.

The athletes who have medals with problems are invited to give them back through the appropriate channels so that they can be immediately repaired and given back.

Milano-Cortina 2026 is confirming their commitment to guarantee that the medals, the symbol of the biggest achievement of each athlete, meet the highest quality standards.

Olympic champ Johnson dominates for USBreezy Johnson competing for the US.(AP)

Downhill champion Breezy ‌Johnson may be heading for a golden ‘double double’ at the Winter Olympics.

Johnon dominated the opening leg of the women’s alpine skiing team combined for the US first team, setting up partner Mikaela Shiffrin for the decisive slalom run.

Johnson and Shiffrin — the most successful World Cup skier of all time with a record 108 wins — are the world champions in the event.

Johnson holds the world and Olympic downhill titles simultaneously after winning Sunday’s opening speed race.

Shiffrin — winner of seven of eight World Cup slaloms this season with the crystal globe in the discipline already secured — now has ‌one run on the sparkling Olimpia ‌delle Tofane piste between her ‌and a first Olympic medal since Pyeongchang 2018.

Johnson — who has never won a World Cup race — started 14th and set a time of 1 minute and 36.59 seconds in gloriously sunny conditions, 0.06 faster than Ariane Rädler for Austria’s second team.

Laura Pirovano put Italy2 in third place with a run 0.27 off the pace and became the host nation’s main hope of a medal after Sofia Goggia, downhill bronze medallist, crashed ‌out.

Goggia’s inside ski slid across and she lost her balance, ending the hopes of teammate Lara Della Mea.

She was able to ski down to the finish and waved to the crowd.

The slalom run us due to start at midnight AEDT.

The women’s team combined event is being held for the first time at an Olympics.

42m agoTue 10 Feb 2026 at 11:34am’A lot of room to improve’: Matt Graham on his run

Matt Graham spoke to media in the mix zone a short time ago.

“Not my best,” he said of his run.

“I had a really good training this morning, just got a little bit out of time and out of rhythm in the middle section and then a little bit hung up on the last turn into the bottom air.

“So, look, not my finest, but a lot of room to improve.”

Graham said it was his own mistakes that cost him.

“The course was good. I mean, it was good all morning,” he said.

“The moguls were a little catchy, so you really just had to be in time and in sync with the bumps, but unfortunately I just made a few mistakes.”

Graham was, at that stage, not sure whether he would have qualified automatically for the first final or not.

But he noted that it didn’t really matter to him either way,

“I mean, it is what it is,” he said.

“It doesn’t matter really, either way you can make it work.”

He sat on the bubble towards the end but Australian co flag-bearer Matt Graham has earned automatic qualification for the men’s moguls final.

Graham snared the 10th and final spot after scoring 75.77.

It wasn’t make or break for the 2018 Olympic silver medallist, as he would have still gone through to Qualification 2 had he missed a top-10 berth.

His Aussie teammates Cooper Woods (15th), Jackson Harvey (23rd) and George Murphy (26th) will contest Qualification 2.

Japan’s reigning world champion Ikuma Horishima topped Qualification 1 with a brilliant score of 85.42.

Qualification 2 will be held at 8pm on Thursday, before Final 1 (10:15pm) and Final 2 (10:55pm) take place.

Light causing issues at moguls

ABC Sport’s Simon Smale is watching on at the men’s moguls and has mentioned Australian George Murphy spoke about the light following his run.

Murphy said the light got a bit flat and that’s what caused his mistake at the top of the course.

Challenging conditions in moguls qualifying

The clouds are coming in a bit here in Livigno, which will impact the light and ability for the skiers to spot their lines.

We had a light dusting of snow this morning but that has not affected the run. It’s not too hard, not too soft. It’s a goldilocks course.

There’s a lot of Aussies here making a hell of a lot of noise. A superb atmosphere for qualifying.

The women’s alpine team combined event is underway and there has already be a a shock in the downhill section.

Italian Sofia Goggia — who won bronze in the women’s individual downhill on Sunday — recorded a DNF after sliding off the course.

Goggia and her fellow skiers are contending with poor light, however, so conditions are tricky for those contesting the downhill in the combined event.

Individual downhill gold medallist Breezy Johnson gave the USA 1 team the provisional lead after posting 1:36.59.

Johnson forms a star duo for the US alongside Mikaela Shiffrin.

Shiffrin has won two Olympic gold medals, in the slalom (2014) and giant slalom (2018).

She will contest the slalom section in the team combined event.
