Does the NBA’s next great rivalry belong to the Detroit Pistons and Charlotte Hornets?

With the Pistons atop the East and the Hornets perhaps the league’s hottest team of late, a key battle between the two upstart teams devolved into a massive brawl on Monday night.

Four players were ejected after the fight, which began when Detroit’s Jalen Duren and Charlotte’s Moussa Diabate got into each other’s faces and escalated when Isaiah Stewart and Miles Bridges went at it on the court.

Here’s a look at the fight and why discipline is likely coming for some of the key players involved.

The Pistons and Hornets sparred after Duren and Diabate exchanged words and went face-to-face after Diabate guarded Duren in the paint.

Duren put his hand in Diabate’s face, which sparked the brawl and turned a war of words into an incident that involved both rosters and coaching staffs. Diabate appeared to take a swipe at Duren and had to be pulled away from the scrum.

As the fight appeared to be dying down, a familiar face in NBA brawl lore became involved: Pistons big man Isaiah Stewart. Stewart, who wasn’t in the game at the time, charged off the bench at Miles Bridges, and the two threw punches at each other before Stewart was restrained and Bridges was pulled away from the fight.

Will Isaiah Stewart be suspended?

Stewart is almost certainly headed for a sizable suspension. Not only did he leave the bench while not in the game, which is supposed to be an automatic one-game ban, but he charged at Bridges and threw punches during the incident.

Stewart is, of course, a repeat offender. He has been at the center of a handful of fights in his NBA career, and the image of him charging at Bridges evokes memories of him charging down the court at LeBron James in 2021.

The Pistons big man earned a two-game suspension for that incident, and he would earn a three-game suspension for punching then-Suns Drew Eubanks off the court in 2024. That history of trouble will likely be a factor in the length of Stewart’s suspension for fighting Bridges.

Will Miles Bridges be suspended?

While Bridges may not receive the same length of a suspension as Stewart because the league could view Stewart as the main aggressor, he could be subject to discipline.

Bridges squared up with Stewart and took swings at him during the fight, which undoubtedly will catch the attention of the league office.

Bridges has also faced previous discipline for an off-court domestic violence incident, though that might not earn him repeat offender status since this brawl falls under on-court behavior.
