Matthew Scarlett sat down with Melbourne Media to reflect on the opportunity to join the Dees.
MELBOURNE welcomed three-time premiership defender Matthew Scarlett to the club late last year, with the former Cat embracing the opportunity to return to the AFL system and contribute to Melbourne’s next phase.
After spending five years away from an AFL club, Scarlett said the move felt like a natural step forward.
“It’s a great opportunity to get back into the AFL system,” Scarlett said. “I’m really thrilled to be here at such a great club and enjoying getting my bearings in a new environment.”
Scarlett’s decision to join Melbourne was shaped by strong existing relationships within the coaching group, including senior coach Steven King, alongside familiar faces he has worked closely with across recent years.
But what truly appealed to the former champion defender was the club’s emerging talent and the chance to work hands-on with a developing list.
“I think they’ve got a really exciting group of young players,” he said. “It’s a new environment for me, and I’m still learning as well – that’s something I’ve really enjoyed.”
Scarlett’s role sees him working closely with Melbourne’s key position players across both ends of the ground, focusing on contested marking, aerial craft, body positioning and defensive fundamentals, while also contributing to ruck development.
As he’s spent more time with the group, Scarlett has been impressed by both the depth of talent and the appetite to improve shown by the playing list.
“I don’t want to single anyone out too much, but some of the young guys really excite me,” he said. “Xavier Taylor, who’s just been drafted, is really exciting, and Daniel Turner is someone I didn’t know a whole lot about before arriving – he’s been really impressive.”
He also highlighted the importance of Melbourne’s experienced players in guiding the next generation, noting their leadership on the training track.
“Those older guys are great teachers,” Scarlett said. “Brody Mihocek is going to be unbelievable for this footy club – that’s an unbelievable get. And Tom McDonald brings such a calm, steady influence for the younger defenders coming through.”
Among the developing group, Scarlett praised Jacob van Rooyen’s approach throughout the pre-season, pointing to his curiosity and work ethic as standout traits.
“He’s had an unbelievable pre-season,” Scarlett said. “His appetite to get better really stands out – he’s always asking questions and looking to improve. I’ve loved his attitude.”
As Melbourne continues its preparations, Scarlett’s presence adds a wealth of experience and insight to the program – reinforcing the club’s commitment to developing talent while building toward what comes next.
