Welcome to what to watch, where we take you through what’s on the box during February.

With the new year firmly in the rearview mirror, streaming is starting to heat up with multiple series returning and show premieres popping up every week.

From new stories to reboots, here’s what we’re watching this month.

Starring: Leon Ford, Celia Pacquola, Brooke Satchwell, a bunch of cute pups

What’s it about? Curmudgeon Roland (Leon Ford) hates most things; small talk, loud supermarkets, his crumbling marriage, but he keeps a special distaste for the mundanity of dog ownership.

How Celia Pacquola went from Bluey disappointment to Dog Park delight

In the new cathartic drama/comedy starring Leon Ford and Celia Pacquola, dogs are the answer to everything.

After his estranged wife (Brooke Satchwell) departs their Melbourne abode for a temporary job opportunity he’s left in charge of their despondent teen Mia, and their fluffy pup Beattie.

Overwhelmed and overstimulated, the TAFE professor reluctantly joins a dog walking group unofficially led by the sunny Samantha (Celia Pacquola), who attempts to crack Roland’s hard shell with her equally mood-elevated dog-group pals.

Billed as a comedy, Dog Park does get some laughs in but the intrigue lies in a bait-and-switch as the show delves deeper into Roland and Samantha’s lives. Come for the cute dogs, stay for the poignant rumination on relationships and what we owe each other.

Perfect for: Those who want to invest in a story and its characters

The Muppet ShowMiss Piggy and Kermit having a conversation

Kermit and Miss Piggy get their moments to shine for The Muppet’s 50th birthday.

Starring: The Muppets, Sabrina Carpenter, Seth Rogan, Maya Rudolph

What’s it about? It’s time to play the music, it’s time to light the lights. The Muppets are back on the box to celebrate their 50th birthday. And you better watch because it’s been confirmed that this one-off special is actually a backdoor pilot and if it works, a whole new series will be coming our way!

That’s a lot of pressure for a half hour of TV but lucky writers Albertina Rizzo, Gabe Liedman and Nedaa Sweiss don’t miss a beat in capturing the essence of what makes The Muppet Show so special, while also updating the content for modern tastes.

Expect some classic Muppet hijinks and celebrity guests Seth Rogan and Maya Ruldolph, but the real (human) MVP is Sabrina Carpenter. The ultra-peppy pop star is the perfect choice for host and every moment she spends on screen with Miss Piggy is television gold.

Bring on the full season!

Perfect for: Uniting generations of fans of silliness

Strip LawA cartoon of two people sitting in a courtroom

Adam Scott and Janelle James’s deft voice work lend a spark to Strip Law. (Supplied: Netflix)

Starring: Adam Scott, Janelle James, Stephen Root

What’s it about? Netflix spent years exploring the seedy and pun-filled underbelly of Hollywood through the eyes of an anthropomorphic horse.

Now they’re pinning hopes on an even slimier part of the US — Las Vegas — in their new animated venture Strip Law. You won’t find any talking animals here, but you will find Parks and Rec’s Adam Scott playing Lincoln Crumb, a down-and-out lawyer pushed out of his firm after the untimely (hit by a truck, head popped off) death of his veteran lawyer mum.

Bojack at 10: How a depressed talking horse changed adult animation

Equal parts hilarious, heartbreaking and daring, the popularity of this cartoon about a chemically unbalanced horse has endured for a decade.

Lincoln’s failing new practice is given the breath of life by strip magician Sheila Flambé (Abbott Elementary’s Janelle James), who teaches the sad sack that winning cases in a place as morally bankrupt as Vegas is more about the razzle dazzle than legal fact.

Created by Cullen Crawford (The Late Show with Stephen Colbert), the jokes can land more elevated Big Mouth than Bojack sometimes, but the background pun gags and stellar voice work (James’s musical cadence was MADE for animation) make it a worthwhile watch.

Perfect for: Those who have a sleazy adult animation hole in their heart

Where to watch: Strip Law premieres on Netflix on February 20

Australia’s Greatest Conman?A man stands in a library holding a toy helicopter

Marc Fennell dives deep into the mythos of John Friedrich in Australia’s Greatest Conman? (Supplied: SBSonDemand)

Starring: Marc Fennell

What’s it about? Ever since SBS’s The Feed departed our TV screens a couple years ago (RIP), some of the ultra-talented team from the former youth current affairs show, including host Marc Fennell, have been producing top-notch historical documentaries.

Their latest — Australia’s Greatest Conman? — is no different.

This time around, Fennell and co zero in on John Friedrich, the former executive director of the National Safety Council of Australia.

In 1988, Friedrich was awarded an Order of Australia for re-hauling the council with hundreds of millions of dollars worth of loans. A couple of years later Friedrich’s con came undone, resulting in a nationwide manhunt and a national embarrassment for the Australian Defence Force.

All of this is engraved in less-than-proud annals of Australian history but through creative visualisations, engaging talking-head interviews and masterful editing Australia’s Greatest Conman? makes this cautionary tale feel fresh and new.

Perfect for: People who froth a little home-grown true crime

Where to watch: Australia’s Greatest Conman? premieres on SBSonDemand on February 24

ScrubsTwo doctors stand in a ICU

Turk (Donald Faison) and JD (Zach Braff) are two of the familiar faces welcoming fans back to Sacred Heart. (Supplied: Disney+)

Starring: Zach Braff, Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, John C. McGinley, Judy Reyes

What’s it about?

No show is safe from the great reboot boom of the 2020s — not even beloved hospital drama, Scrubs. Creator Bill Lawrence had been floating the idea of a 10th season (following the woefully misguided Scrubs: Med School) since 2022 but things kicked into gear just last year with the announcement of a new season AND the return of most of the original cast.

Scrubs is getting a reboot just in time for the hospital procedural revival

In a sea of hospital-based TV, long-running sitcoms Scrubs is often highlighted as one of the most realistic options. Now the reboot has been confirmed, and off the back of The Pitt’s big Emmy wins, we look back at the beloved show.

Scrubs season 10 sees us return to Sacred Heart Hospital where old favourites JD (Zach Braff), Elliot (Sarah Chalke) and Turk (Donald Faison) are now some of the most seasoned physicians in the place.

But the show doesn’t forget its baby-deer-learning-how-to-walk roots, introducing a swathe of new interns. SNL alumni Vanessa Bayer also joins the crew as an overzealous hospital administrator, while comedian Joel Kim Booster features as Dr Eric Park.

Perfect for: Indulging in a little early 2000s nostalgia (or being rage-baited by it)

Where to watch: Scrubs season 10 premieres on Disney+ on February 26
