Razer is leaning hard into nostalgia with the return of its very first gaming mouse, but this revival isn’t aimed at the average PC gamer.

The Razer Boomslang 20th Anniversary Edition has been officially unveiled, carrying a hefty US$1,337 price tag and limited to just 1,337 units worldwide.

Originally released in the late 1990s, the Boomslang is widely regarded as the world’s first dedicated gaming mouse, arriving before “gaming peripherals” were even a category.

Its claim to fame was precision: a high-resolution tracking system that gave competitive players an edge at a time when most mice were purely utilitarian.

Fast forward to 2026, and the reborn Boomslang is a very different beast.

While it retains the original ambidextrous shape and translucent design cues, the internals have been completely modernised.

The mouse now features Razer’s Focus Pro 45K Gen-2 optical sensor, delivering up to 45,000 DPI with 99.8% accuracy, alongside HyperPolling wireless technology with an 8,000Hz polling rate.

Razer has also gone all-in on premium touches. The Boomslang includes fourth-generation optical switches rated for 100 million clicks, PU leather-wrapped buttons for improved grip, nine-zone Razer Chroma RGB lighting, and a Mouse Dock Pro for wireless charging. Each unit ships with a collectible LED display frame that showcases the mouse’s internal components in a deconstructed layout.

The price puts the Boomslang well above most flagship smartphones, including Apple’s latest iPhone Pro models.

Preorders opened in staggered windows globally starting 10 February, with US allocations already sold out. While Australian pricing hasn’t been confirmed, local buyers can expect to pay well north of $2,000 once exchange rates and taxes are factored in.
