Australian Darcie Morton will kick off her Winter Olympic campaign tonight in the women’s 15-kilometre biathlon from 12:15am AEDT.

She’s just the seventh Australian to go to the Winter Olympics for the sport — and the first in 12 years.

Her family has travelled from Marlo, in East Gippsland, to cheer her on.

Darcie is coached by brother Damon; her sister, Damika, is an up-and-coming star on the world biathlon scene; and dad Cameron is a former Olympic biathlete and coach.

Cameron Morton told ABC Regional Victoria Statewide Mornings Darcie’s qualification was “a monumental achievement”.

“It’s 15 years of work, she’s a trailblazer. We’re tremendously proud of her and looking forward to her putting on a real show for Australia,” he said.

Darcie will have to cross-country ski a 3-kilometre loop five times, stopping between each loop to slow her heart rate down enough to hit four targets with a .22 rifle.

Each miss at the shooting range adds to an athlete’s total time.

“Anyone can win this event, if they shoot clean and have a really fast day on the track. Darcie is a phenomenal shot, so we’re really confident and proud of her,” Cameron Morton said.
