UNSW expands drink container recycling bins across our campuses.
UNSW has expanded our smart drink container recycling initiative. The Kensington campus now has 10 smart bins and one at Paddington and Randwick, making it easier for students and staff to recycle drink containers.
The smart bins use a barcode-scanning panel that opens only for eligible items with a barcode such as cans, plastic and glass bottles, and juice boxes. This technology helps reduce contamination — a major challenge in recycling, where even a small number of incorrect items can send an entire bin’s contents to landfill.
Charopy – a startup founded by UNSW alumnus Martin Collings – developed the bins, and UNSW’s Makerspace designed and manufactured their core components.
In January, we’ve already recycled 1830 drink bottles and cans.
How do you use the bin?
Empty your bottle or can, scan the barcode and drop it in when the flap opens.Â
You can find all bin locations on the UNSW Sustainability Map under Recycling Facilities.
While recycling is important, the best waste is no waste. Consider reusable bottles and cups whenever possible.
