Singer Chappell Roan wanted to turn Melbourne’s night-life into her own Pink Pony Club, but could only find a handful of punters to party with on Wednesday evening.
So much for the city’s much touted vibrant night-life.
The Grammy award-winning star has hit Melbourne ahead of headlining the Laneway Festival on Friday at Flemington racecourse.
First stop was CBD hotspot Cherry Bar on Wednesday, drinking some “mocktails” with her crew and forgoing hanging in the cordoned off VIP section.
Cherry Bar owner James Young said there were only around 17 punters at the bar at the time and that she “was very modest polite and lovely.”
“Didn’t take any pictures of her, cos that would be uncool, but can report that she drank a couple of mocktails and was very modest, polite and lovely,” Young said.
“She didn’t hide in the ‘VIP’ Andy Bar, she stood the whole time at our main bar downstairs.
“This means everything. We think she’s the biggest artist on the planet. She just a normal human. Gold.”
“Her crew were especially supportive of Cherry Bar, so that was nice too.
“I am so grateful to Laneway Festival for “stimulating” the struggling Melbourne hospitality scene. The world needs people on the streets.”
Young said he was on the decks DJ’ing at the time and that “it was very satisfying to see Chappell embracing the ‘local sounds’ of underground Australia”.
Celebrities from Lady Gaga to Noel Gallagher, Mick Jagger, Axl Rose, Metallica and Red Hot Chili Peppers have hung at the city bar owned and founded by Young who is a vigilant supporter of the local arts and music scene.
