The Albanese government’s plan to make Australia a global supplier of processed critical minerals has been dealt a major blow with the closure of the nation’s leading lithium refinery.
US lithium giant Albemarle said it would shut the $1.5 billion Kemerton lithium hydroxide refinery in Western Australia, less than four years after it opened because it could not compete against nations such as China. About 250 jobs will be lost.
