GWS football boss Jason McCartney has provided an update on superstar Tom Green, who suffered a suspected ACL rupture at training on Friday morning.
Green was helped from the field by two trainers during a match-simulation session on Friday morning.
“(While) changing direction and evading a tackle, he felt something in his left knee,” McCartney said.
“Our medical team has assessed and they unfortunately are confident it is an ACL injury but we will get scans in the next day or two to get confirmation.
“It’s looking like a worst-case scenario, but fingers crossed, we are hoping for the best.
“He’s in shock, like the coach and myself and his teammates, but he’s reasonably upbeat.
“Tom’s a quality person. If that is the case, he’ll be missed but I know he’ll be strong around the footy club. It’s never been about Tom so while for the moment, we feel for him, we know he’ll get around us as we will for him and he’ll bounce back.”
He struggled to put weight on his left knee and was consoled by teammates as he left the track.
The 25-year-old Canberra product was primed for an enormous year, coming off a 23-game year where he averaged a tick under 30 disposals.
The loss of Green would be a savage blow to GWS’s hopes of improving on its fifth-placed finish in 2025.
With Josh Kelly also sidelined for much of the season, it puts more pressure on recruit Clayton Oliver and adds enormous responsibility onto the shoulders of emerging star Finn Callaghan. Callaghan missed Friday’s intraclub with general soreness.
“On his own, he’s a brilliant player and with our group, he’ll add different things we need as well so we want him bringing his best,” assistant Ben Hart said of Oliver.
“He’s learning a new system, a few things are different so he has quality attributes that will add to our side so we’re looking forward to that.”
Skipper Toby Greene is also expected to spend more time through the engine room, while Hart anointed second-year player Jack Ough as a “ready-made replacement”.
The Giants open their season against Hawthorn on March 7.
