Fresh off the news of a baby giraffe at Melbourne Zoo, is the announcement that not one, not two, but three elephants at Werribee Open Range Zoo are now pregnant! Happy mums Num-Oi, Dokkoon and Mali are expecting their calves around April 2027. In the meantime, you can see the nine-member herd on the Elephant Trail at the zoo in Werribee.

Pregnant elephants at Werribee Open Range Zoo

This herd of Asian elephants made the massive move from Melbourne Zoo to their 21-hectare home just last year. Among them were three calves, who were also born from Num-Oi, Dokkoon and Mali in late 2022 and early 2023.

“The Elephant Trail has transformed what’s possible for elephant welfare in Australia, and to be celebrating new pregnancies just one year on is an extraordinary endorsement of the environment we’ve created,” said Zoos Victoria CEO Dr Jenny Gray.

The Elephant Trail is the size of Melbourne Zoo, so the herd has plenty of space to wander around. See them up close as you meander along the walking trail. Watch them cool off in two mega pools, journey underneath an Elephant Overpass, and visit the barn, where you might see keepers training the herd.

Asian elephants are endangered, making this baby boom extra precious.

If you’re planning to visit the trail, remember that kids go free on weekends and public holidays. Meanwhile, adult tickets are from $54.50. Learn more about the zoo here.
