At this point, Tom Aspinall will be lucky to get his full eyesight back. And until he repairs that ocular trauma everything else is on hold, especially when it comes to his fighting career.
As you may know, Aspinall has been sidelined since October of last year after suffering double eyes pokes at UFC 321 in a heavyweight title defense against Ciryl Gane. Aspinall had been ridiculed for not continuing the fight despite revealing that he has lasting effects from the injury. Some people around the MMA community may have even doubted the severity of the incident, but after learning of Aspinall’s double eye surgery earlier this week there should be no more speculation.
Aspinall is fighting for his vision right now and his UFC future completely depends on getting it repaired to what it once was. The only problem is that Aspinall is still experiencing some major side effects from Gane’s illegal act four months ago. These issues are prohibiting Aspinall from driving a car, playing with his kids, and returning to training. The idea of him making a return to UFC’s Octagon anytime soon would be wishful thinking to say the least.
Earlier this week, Uncrowned’s Peter Carroll published an article that covered his time with Aspinall during his recent surgery. The piece not only shed some light on Aspinall’s mental state and apparent hatred for the business side of the sport, but it also went into detail about the ongoing issues he’s experiencing. Those side effects are listed below and to be honest they’re hard to read. Aspinall can’t seem to do everyday things at this moment in time and it’s become a sad reality to see for one of the most talented fighters in the sport.
