BISMARCK, N.D. – Valley City State University women’s basketball fell to Bismarck State 85-79 on Saturday, Feb. 14. The Vikings are now 9-15 overall, and 6-14 in Frontier Conference games. Bismarck State improves to 8-17 overall and 8-12 in Frontier Conference games.
The opening quarter was a back-and-forth battle with both teams trading early baskets and momentum. Bismarck State used strong perimeter shooting, including multiple three-pointers, to briefly take the lead, while Valley City State answered with steady scoring in the paint from Abey Aslesen and JayCee Richter. The lead changed several times before Valley City State closed the quarter on a late basket to hold a narrow 24–23 advantage over Bismarck State Mystics.
Bismarck State found its rhythm offensively in the second, sparked by hot shooting. The Mystics went on several scoring runs, stretching their lead with a combination of three-pointers and transition baskets. Valley City State stayed competitive behind free throws and inside scoring, but VCSU trailed 45–40 at halftime.
At halftime, the Vikings shot 14-34 from the field, 3-11 from the three-point line, and 9/10 from the free throw line. VCSU was led by Abby Aslesen with 12 points and five rebounds. The Mystics shot 15-37 from the field, 11-26 from the three-point line, and 4-4 from the free throw line.
The third quarter featured another tight stretch, with Valley City State briefly regaining the lead thanks to strong play from Ellie Braaten and Richter. However, Bismarck State responded with timely shots and aggressive drives, reclaiming control late in the period, closing 64-59.
In the final quarter, Bismarck State maintained its lead. Despite Valley City State’s efforts to close the gap with key baskets and late steals, the Mystics consistently answered, sealing the game from the free-throw line. The Vikings would fall 85-79 in a hard-fought battle till the end.
Closing the game, the Vikings shot 31-70 from the field, 6-23 from the three-point line, and 11-16 from the free throw line. Aslesen closed the game with 23 points, 13 rebounds, and two steals. JayCee Richter followed with 19 points, eight rebounds, and one steal. The Mystics shot 27-68 from the field, 14-44 from the three-point line, and 17-20 from the free throw line.
